When moving to a new area it’s not always easy to know which roads are the most popular.
If you fall in love with a house, should the popularity of the road, even come into your decision to make an offer? Read on to find out more:
Even if you have done some basic research, it is still a good idea to have an in-depth conversation with the agent who is marketing the property.
The following roads are always in demand, and provide a mixture of properties in regards age, price range, and style:
This road is quite long, and runs from Sidcup Hill to Foots Cray. From Sidcup Hill, Rectory Lane is intersected by a mini-roundabout, which leads into:
Of particular note in Knoll Road, is Merton Court Preparatory School. It was founded in 1899 by John William Ernest Pearce and named after the College he attended in Oxford. It is highly regarded as one of the best schools in Sidcup.
A little closer to Sidcup Station is Birkbeck Road. It is also close to Birkbeck Primary School, and within easy walking distance of Sidcup High Street, making it another very popular choice.
This is another road, that also remains popular. Many of its houses are terraced, and it is within walking distance of the shops in Halfway Street and near the Hollies Countryside Club. It is very close to bus routes, and is within easy walking distance of Sidcup Station.
Even closer to Sidcup Station are homes in Old Farm Avenue, particularly those situated between Hollies Avenue and Station Road. Robert Wisdom grew up in Old Farm Avenue, and it remains one of Sidcup’s most sought-after roads. Many of the original semi-detached Chalet-style houses have been extended, taking them from two bedrooms upstairs, plus a smaller study/bedroom downstairs, to even more desirable three, four, and even five-bedroom homes. Most have good size rear gardens, allowing plenty of space for spacious rear extensions.
Wren Road, together with surrounding roads, such as, Melville, Lewis and Walton roads, were built as larger Chalet-style properties. Nestled between Faraday Avenue and Bexley Lane, these properties are close to three secondary schools: Cleve Park, Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, and Hurstmere School. These larger chalets make exceptionally spacious family homes in the Sidcup area.
The Hollies development is in an area between Willersley Avenue and Burnt Oak Lane. It was originally a private house with extensive grounds of approximately 62 acres. The house was sold, and became an orphanage. A few years later additional buildings were added, and the site became a Children’s Home, housing more than 500 children in the leafy suburbs of Sidcup. The home closed in the 1980’s, and The Hollies is now a very popular development, that still retains some of the original buildings and a Countryside Club. Roads in the vicinity of The Hollies, such as: Chatsworth, Collindale, Montrose, Cavendish and Marlborough Park Avenue, never lose their appeal. Many of these properties are again semi-detached Chalet-style, and nearby Ramilles Road has a good selection of terraced houses.
Other roads that buyers are often interested in, which are just a short drive from the extremely popular Danson Park, are:
Bladindon Drive and Penhill Road. Are two more of roads that buyers often search for. Both of these are close to the shops at Blendon. Chapel House still stands at the Blendon roundabout, and was originally in the extensive grounds of Danson House.
In roads off of Sidcup Hill you will find many Victorian properties. These roads, such as: Durham, Lincoln, Sussex, Oxford and Warwick were all named after English earls.
This is another road that is extensively searched for on property sites, and is very convenient for Sidcup High Street, and all its amenities.
Our office is just a stones’ throw from Sidcup Station, and next to the M&S Food Hall in Station Road. We pride ourselves on our extensive knowledge of Sidcup. In fact, Robert Wisdom grew up in Old Farm Avenue. He also attended local Primary and Secondary schools, so has a unique insight with regards homes, schools, transport links, and facilities in the area.
So, should the popularity of a road affect your decision to buy?
As you will see, some roads remain popular for a variety of reasons, and these will therefore command a competitive price. For re-sale purposes then yes, it is worth taking this into consideration, but in our experience, it is usually the house itself that wins over a buyer, together with the amenities available in the area, such as schools, transport links, green spaces, doctors’ surgeries, a hospital, gyms and community facilities.
Sidcup is very fortunate to have these in abundance. Aside from the schools previously mentioned, Sidcup also has a variety of equally popular primary schools, such as: Burnt Oak, Longlands, Days Lane, Our Lady of the Rosary. Schools in Sidcup cater for all abilities, and Marlborough School is a unique secondary school in the area, that caters for children with complex needs and learning difficulties, whilst Bird College, trains older students in Dance and Musical theatre.
Two more schools, still in Sidcup, but in the more specific area of Blackfen, are; Sherwood Park Primary, and Blackfen Secondary School for Girls.
With regards amenities; two of the most popular are: Storyteller - a popular cinema and community hub, and Sidcup Leisure Centre, which houses a gym, swimming pool, sports hall and a creche. There are also a variety of excellent restaurants pubs and cafes in the area.
Along with the variety of residential properties, businesses, leisure facilities, shopping areas, and schools, Sidcup also boasts an abundance of Green Spaces.
No wonder there are so many searches for properties in Sidcup, on Rightmove and Zoopla!
